The Top of the World is Not for Everyone Once the exclusive domain of the elite mountaineers, the roof of the world now lures scores of amateurs. These climbers seek a challenge that begins as high drama but can end abruptly as tragedy (Breashears, 1997).† At 29,035 feet, Mount Everest is the â€Å"top of the world† and the ultimate challenge for Climbers. But recently with advances in technology and equipment, more people are attempting to conquer Everest, although many of them do not belong in such an unpredictable, dangerous place with such little experience. With more and more people venturing to the top of Everest, substantial pollution has been a result, which is an expensive and difficult problem to correct at such high altitudes. Everest, which was once considered a sacred home of the gods, is now a commercialized, life threatening challenge with accumulating contamination. Mount Everest is situated at the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, on the border of Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Traditionally, those living near Everest honored the mountain and thought of the Himalayas as scared homes of the gods. No local people climbed them until the early 1900’s. But as foreign expeditions brought tourist dollars and Western ideas, the local people began to serve as porters for foreign climbers (Encarta, 2000). Many expeditions were sent out to reach the summit of Everest, but most ended unsuccessfully with tragic deaths. Cristy was then led into the jail where the judge also offers treatment for two years or ninety days in jail. Of course she chooses jail and serves her time and is released. Cristy relapses within six weeks of being released from jail and is currently still using alcohol and methamphetamine. The Bond of Friendship Essay Imagine a lonely life with no one to talk to when feeling down or have no one to share the deepest of secrets with. There would be emptiness, a void, a deep solitude. Having friends is much like surrounding a person with love, happiness and warmth. They are there in the best and worst of times without question. Friends are companions with whom fun and laughter are enjoyed. Friendship is an essential in life that can be taken wherever one goes, and that can be counted on no matter what arises. It is not uncommon for children to bond at an early age, growing closer as the years go by. For instance, two little girls may play together with dolls, board games, and have fun playing dress-up. As time goes by, they begin to share lifes disappointments and confide in one another. Childhood blossoms into adolescence and then into adulthood. The trust and bond grow deeper, as fond memories are made. But what happens when those two young women are forced to separate due to changes such as different schools, or perhaps one of the families move? True friends remain together even when miles might separate them. Distance does not endanger the friendship, because the two friends stay in touch by phone, texts, emails, and even face-to-face chats on their computers. The same scenario may apply to a group of close friends who are, one day, scattered across the globe. Somehow, space cannot damper the cherished relationships. Simply put, friendship is not broken by time or distance, because. It is something that is taken with a person and carried in the heart. Friends share so very much together, though they may not always see eye-to-eye. As in any relationship, arguments can happen, and different viewpoints, actions, and decisions made by friends may cause a slight disconnect. However, a friend always has the best interest of her pal in mind. She will be there to support, love, and comfort her friend even if she doesnt agree with everything that friend says or does. Sometimes friends challenge each other, and thats okay, too. Life isnt always a pleasurable ride, and there may be bumps in the road, but a friend is always there to pick up the pieces when needed. Friendship mean sharing enjoyment and laughs when things are wonderful, but also sharing hugs and tears when hurt and heartbreak come to pass. A good friend always lends a shoulder during the darkest times, when they are needed most. In closing, it is easy to see that friendship cannot be defined by just a word or two. Friends are an element of the human soul. Good times, difficult times, or even quiet times spent together are when friends envelope a person with peace and contentment. Miles apart, friends are there when needed most. That, in itself, is a comfort. Friendship is knowing that a special bond created by trust, companionship, and memories will forever be, no matter what. It is something that carried and treasured within a heart through a lifetime.

Louis ?Satchmo? Armstrong Louis Satchmo Armstrong was one of the most popular musicians of his time. Upon initiating my research, I was surprised to find conflicting dates as to when he was born. Encarta Africa said he was born in 1901, 1001 things to know about African American history-1898, regular Encarta 1900, Little Louis and the jazz band by Angela Shelf Medearis says his date of birth is August 4, 1901. The book Jazz Stars by Richard Rennert states that Louis Armstrong was born in 1899, the book Louis Armstrong by Sam Tanenhaus says he was born on July 4, 1900. The reason why they have so many different dates is due to the fact that he probably wasnt born in a hastpital and they did not use to keep good records of black peoples birthdays. So for accuracy sake, we can say he was born in the end of the 1800s, or the beginning of the 1900s. Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother, Mary Albert was a 15 or 16-year-old prostitute. He lived with his mother, whom he called Mayann, and his younger sister, Beatrice, whom he called Mama Lucy, and his grandmother. His Father, William Armstrong, seldom visited little Louis. Ever since he was seven years old, Little Louis worked after school to help his mother. He sold buckets of coal late into the night. During that time people used coal for heating and for cooking. He blew a tin party horn so that everyone knew that he had coal for sale. He found that if he took the wooden mouthpiece off the end of the horn and used two fingers over the end of the mouthpiece hole, he could play a tune. He wanted a real trumpet but he was too poor to buy one. Louis Armstrongs neighborhood was poor but lively. The men on the waterfront bellowed out rhythmic words and chants as they unlocked the ships. The washerwomen sang mournful spirituals as they scrubbed their loads of cloths. Day night, ragtime musicdanced out of the neighborhood honky-tonks. At night, Little Louis fell asleep to the sad songs of the local blues singers. Those sorrowful songs sounded like they were full of all the pain in the world. Little Louis enjoyed all kinds of music, but he loved the music played by the brass bands most of all. Sometimes after a parade, Joe king Oliver, the best cornet player in New Orleans, would let Louis carry his cornet case. Little Louis wanted to make music too. He wanted to play a cornet just like King Oliver. In music, Armstrong discovered the path to success, after a New Years Eve prank in 1913. He had taken his stepfathers .38-caliber pistol and six blanks and fired them into the air. Before he knew what was happening, a policeman had grabbed Little Louis by the arm. Off went Little Louis in the custody of the New Orleans police. The judge decided to send him to the Colored Waifs Home for boys to keep him out of trouble. The home gave poor boys a chance to finish school and learn a trade. A military man, Captain Joseph Jones and his wife ran it. He ran the home military style. Little Louis was heart broken and home sick. Then one day he heard a brass band playing. He followed the music and found himself in a room full of boys and instruments. He went to band rehearsal everyday and finally he was asked to join the band. The conductor of the band, Mr. Davis, first gave him a tambourine. Then Louis tried the drums. Then he tried the saxophone to play, and finally a cornet. Mr. Davis helped Louis learn how to play the cornet properly. He showed Louis how to hold his mouth and use his breathing his throat and his stomach muscles to produce a good tone. In 1914, when Louis was thirteen years old, he was allowed to leave the home. Louis wasnt little anymore. After two years of hard work, he had become a talented musician. Louis noticed that New Orleans music was different. Ragtime was almost gone. A swinging new type of music was being played. People called this kind of music jazz.
