The Bond of Friendship Essay Example For Students

The Bond of Friendship Essay Imagine a lonely life with no one to talk to when feeling down or have no one to share the deepest of secrets with. There would be emptiness, a void, a deep solitude. Having friends is much like surrounding a person with love, happiness and warmth. They are there in the best and worst of times without question. Friends are companions with whom fun and laughter are enjoyed. Friendship is an essential in life that can be taken wherever one goes, and that can be counted on no matter what arises. It is not uncommon for children to bond at an early age, growing closer as the years go by. For instance, two little girls may play together with dolls, board games, and have fun playing dress-up. As time goes by, they begin to share lifes disappointments and confide in one another. Childhood blossoms into adolescence and then into adulthood. The trust and bond grow deeper, as fond memories are made. But what happens when those two young women are forced to separate due to changes such as different schools, or perhaps one of the families move? True friends remain together even when miles might separate them. Distance does not endanger the friendship, because the two friends stay in touch by phone, texts, emails, and even face-to-face chats on their computers. The same scenario may apply to a group of close friends who are, one day, scattered across the globe. Somehow, space cannot damper the cherished relationships. Simply put, friendship is not broken by time or distance, because. It is something that is taken with a person and carried in the heart. Friends share so very much together, though they may not always see eye-to-eye. As in any relationship, arguments can happen, and different viewpoints, actions, and decisions made by friends may cause a slight disconnect. However, a friend always has the best interest of her pal in mind. She will be there to support, love, and comfort her friend even if she doesnt agree with everything that friend says or does. Sometimes friends challenge each other, and thats okay, too. Life isnt always a pleasurable ride, and there may be bumps in the road, but a friend is always there to pick up the pieces when needed. Friendship mean sharing enjoyment and laughs when things are wonderful, but also sharing hugs and tears when hurt and heartbreak come to pass. A good friend always lends a shoulder during the darkest times, when they are needed most. In closing, it is easy to see that friendship cannot be defined by just a word or two. Friends are an element of the human soul. Good times, difficult times, or even quiet times spent together are when friends envelope a person with peace and contentment. Miles apart, friends are there when needed most. That, in itself, is a comfort. Friendship is knowing that a special bond created by trust, companionship, and memories will forever be, no matter what. It is something that carried and treasured within a heart through a lifetime.

Louis Satchmo Armstrong Essays - Music, Jazz, American Music

Louis ?Satchmo? Armstrong Louis Satchmo Armstrong was one of the most popular musicians of his time. Upon initiating my research, I was surprised to find conflicting dates as to when he was born. Encarta Africa said he was born in 1901, 1001 things to know about African American history-1898, regular Encarta 1900, Little Louis and the jazz band by Angela Shelf Medearis says his date of birth is August 4, 1901. The book Jazz Stars by Richard Rennert states that Louis Armstrong was born in 1899, the book Louis Armstrong by Sam Tanenhaus says he was born on July 4, 1900. The reason why they have so many different dates is due to the fact that he probably wasnt born in a hastpital and they did not use to keep good records of black peoples birthdays. So for accuracy sake, we can say he was born in the end of the 1800s, or the beginning of the 1900s. Louis Armstrong was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His mother, Mary Albert was a 15 or 16-year-old prostitute. He lived with his mother, whom he called Mayann, and his younger sister, Beatrice, whom he called Mama Lucy, and his grandmother. His Father, William Armstrong, seldom visited little Louis. Ever since he was seven years old, Little Louis worked after school to help his mother. He sold buckets of coal late into the night. During that time people used coal for heating and for cooking. He blew a tin party horn so that everyone knew that he had coal for sale. He found that if he took the wooden mouthpiece off the end of the horn and used two fingers over the end of the mouthpiece hole, he could play a tune. He wanted a real trumpet but he was too poor to buy one. Louis Armstrongs neighborhood was poor but lively. The men on the waterfront bellowed out rhythmic words and chants as they unlocked the ships. The washerwomen sang mournful spirituals as they scrubbed their loads of cloths. Day night, ragtime musicdanced out of the neighborhood honky-tonks. At night, Little Louis fell asleep to the sad songs of the local blues singers. Those sorrowful songs sounded like they were full of all the pain in the world. Little Louis enjoyed all kinds of music, but he loved the music played by the brass bands most of all. Sometimes after a parade, Joe king Oliver, the best cornet player in New Orleans, would let Louis carry his cornet case. Little Louis wanted to make music too. He wanted to play a cornet just like King Oliver. In music, Armstrong discovered the path to success, after a New Years Eve prank in 1913. He had taken his stepfathers .38-caliber pistol and six blanks and fired them into the air. Before he knew what was happening, a policeman had grabbed Little Louis by the arm. Off went Little Louis in the custody of the New Orleans police. The judge decided to send him to the Colored Waifs Home for boys to keep him out of trouble. The home gave poor boys a chance to finish school and learn a trade. A military man, Captain Joseph Jones and his wife ran it. He ran the home military style. Little Louis was heart broken and home sick. Then one day he heard a brass band playing. He followed the music and found himself in a room full of boys and instruments. He went to band rehearsal everyday and finally he was asked to join the band. The conductor of the band, Mr. Davis, first gave him a tambourine. Then Louis tried the drums. Then he tried the saxophone to play, and finally a cornet. Mr. Davis helped Louis learn how to play the cornet properly. He showed Louis how to hold his mouth and use his breathing his throat and his stomach muscles to produce a good tone. In 1914, when Louis was thirteen years old, he was allowed to leave the home. Louis wasnt little anymore. After two years of hard work, he had become a talented musician. Louis noticed that New Orleans music was different. Ragtime was almost gone. A swinging new type of music was being played. People called this kind of music jazz.

Rachel Carson Essays - Counterculture Of The 1960s, Rachel Carson

Rachel Carson Hello, my name is Rachel Lousie Carson. I was born on a farm in Springdale, Pennsylvania on May 27, 1907. My mother, Maria McLean Carson was a dedicated teacher and throughout my childhood she encouraged my interests in nature and in writing. She also encouraged me to publish my first story A Battle in the Clouds in the St. Nicholas magazine while I was in fourth grade. After graduating from Parnassus High School, I enrolled into the Pennsylvania College for Women. I majored in English and continued to write but I also had to take two semesters of science, which changed my life. In my junior year I changed my major to zoology, even though science was not considered an appropriate avenue for women. After graduating college in 1928 I had earned a full one year scholarship to Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. This scholarship did not relieve me or my family of our financial burdens, so I worked throughout graduate school in the genetics department assisting Dr. Raymond Pearl and Dr. H.S. Jennings and I worked as an assistant teacher in the zoology department at the University of Maryland. In 1932 I received my masters in marine zoology. I continued working part-time as a teacher after graduating to help support my family through the early years of the Depression. In 1935 my father had a heart attack and passed away leaving me to provide for my mother. In 1936, my sister Marion passed away at the age of forty leaving behind two young daughters, and my mother encouraged me to take them in. That same year I took the civil service examination necessary for promotion to full-time junior aquatic biologist. I scored higher than all the other candidates ( who were all male) and became the first female biologist ever hired by the Bureau of Fisheries whom I was employed by for sixteen years as a writer. My article entitled "Undersea" which had been published in the Atlantic Monthly, won praise from scientists, naturalists, and literary critics, inspiring me to write my first book. Under the Sea Wind debuted in 1941 to critical acclaim in both literary and scientific circles but sales plummeted with the bombing of Pearl Harbor. 1942 I began working for the Fish and Wildlife Service promoting fish as an alternative to foods in short supply because of the war. By 1948 I moved into an exclusively male domain, earning the grade of biologist, and becoming the editor-in-chief of the Information Division. It was not an easy climb though; my close friend and associate Bob Hines once said I was an able executive with almost a man's administrative qualities. But it was Hines who also said that my qualities of zest and humor made even the dull bureaucratic procedure a matter of quite fun. My second book The Sea Around Us written in 1950 was "a book for anyone who has looked out upon the ocean with wonder." I won the George Westinghouse Science Writing Award for one chapter of that book entitled "The Birth of an Island." The book itself remained on the New York Times bestseller list for eighty-one weeks. Marie Rodell decided to re-release my first book at this time and I then had two books on the best sellers list. The success of the two books had given me the financial security my mother and I had been needing so I could finally leave the Fish and Wildlife Service to dedicate my life to writing. I moved to the coast of Maine and began working on my third book, The Edge of the Sea in 1955 which would detail life at the ocean's shoreline. This book remained on the best sellers list for twenty-three weeks. During 1956 one of my nieces had passed away and I adopted her five year old son Roger who I had always been especially fond of. My mother passed away one year later at the age of eighty-eight. I received a letter from Olga Owens Huckins in 1958 which inspired me to write my fourth book Silent Spring which I completed in 1962. In her letter she told me she was horrified to find birds dead and dying throughout her property. A few days earlier local agencies conducted massive, unannounced spraying of the pesticide DDT. I had long suspected the dangers posed by the use of DDT. I researched the matter and the results were frightening and I felt the whole story needed to be put in a book. I

Informative Essay Sample on the Photographer #8211; Lee Towndrow

Informative Essay Sample on the Photographer #8211; Lee Towndrow Essay on Lee Towndrow the Photographer Lee Towndrow is a renowned commercial and portrait photographer from Canada but currently based in U.S.A. Lee Towndrow began his profession as a photographer and designer with a design firm that he founded. The firm was popularly known for the artwork of creating the album cover for prominent bands from Canada including Sloan, The Inbreds, The Flashing Lights and Michelle McAdorey. Towndrow became a Flame artist in 2000. This happened at TOPIX Computer Graphics, an exposure that he utilized in creating effects for TV commercials and various music videos. He lived in Buenos Aires from 2004 to 2005, the place from which, he did a collaboration with Roberto Jacoby, Raumlabor-Berlin, m7red, Kiwi, Eugenia Herrera, and Cecilia Sainz on conceptual art projects like Proyecto Venus, ArteBA and Darkroom. Every product of Towndrow is appealing and captures my attention. As part of his achievements, one of Lee Towndrow’s photographs was featured on the Applied Arts Photography’s cover as well as on the Illustration Annual which happened in the year 2000. Some other two photographs of Lee were selected and featured in the 2011 Graphics Top 100 collection of photographs. His series of achievements are a source of motivation to every lover of photography. Lee Towndrow has a website, â€Å"www.leetowndrow.com†, that has peculiar features. Amongst the coolest features of Lee’s site, is that it portrays the ability of viewing all the hosted photos on a single gigantic â€Å"wall,† as does the Cooliris application for web browsers. From the web, the viewer is at liberty to choosing a picture and viewing it as sideshow of the images featured in a row. Some photos tell a story, for example, the grainy, images of the night vision featuring strange wandering creatures. Other pictures represent cool portraits, captured from interesting angles that are with bright and enthusiastic colors. Some portray just plain crazy. All of these amongst many pictures are awesome. Though these photos are not detailed, the bio tells all we need in appealing and colorful way. The website displays simplicity without relying on various overly gimmicks of appealing to viewers. It merely displays honest, clever, and straightforward abilities of Lees Towndrow. From an I.T point of view, I treasure these attributes of Lees’ website. According to Lees, in his personal project titled anachronisms, he constructed a series of anachronisms like a means of studying fashion image and intimacy. This exposition inspires a lot simply by revealing of how he had watched the relationships around him change. When one is young, he/she is unfamiliar with intimacy and closeness, and yet all this comes to humans very naturally. And as one grows, there is a tendency of him/her distancing from others, as well as choosing sometimes to only cultivate intimacy with one partner. Towndrow got interested in the outcome, when such rules are reversed. The photographs’ staging is a nod to photography of fashion. Outside the art world, photography of fictional narrative has been portrayed as the almost absolute province of editorials’ fashion. Lees’ intention was to play by those principles (rules), but consider changing the characters. Images were shot with natural light- only reflectors and mirrors were used to light t he scenes. It was termed the self-imposed production rule. Do you need professional help with essay writing online? Our custom essay writing service will write a custom paper for you, on any topic!

Personality Assessments Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Personality Assessments - Essay Example Both documents contain 240 factors (perceptions of attitudes and traits) detailed on a five point scale, starting from "intensely disagree" to "intensely agree" Lastly, there includes a 60 item evaluation of factors only pertained to as the "NEO FFI." There are ordinary and printed forms of all documents accessible (Millon, 1997). The module indicates that implementation of the entire version must last at approximately half an hour at most. The evaluation must not be done if there are aspects of more than 20 that are left without answers. Experts mention that in spite of the fact that the test is well-equipped to manage the impacts of negligence and indecisiveness of the participants, that if more than a hundred answers, or less than a hundred answers, are "agree" or "intensely agree," the outcomes must be analyzed with extreme care. The theoretical foundations of the NEO PI-R have been put under intense criticism. Neither Paul T. Costa, Jr. nor Robert R. McCrae had any established backgrounds in the aspect of personality assessment. Also, the concept of mentality forms, which the NEO PI-R aims to functionalize, is not established on any valid psychological research cases. Experts mention that the NEO PI-R procedures basically involve critical thinking and recall, procedures generally neglected by the modern subject of psychology (Morey, 2003). 4) The factors that users such test should consider One factor that the users of the NEO PI-R personality assessment needs to consider is the subjective authentication included.
